An Overview of the Tummy Tuck

An abdominoplasty, or “tummy tuck” removes excess skin and stretch marks after weight loss or pregnancy. During a tummy tuck the surgeon directly removes excess abdominal skin and fat and tightens the abdominal wall.

Tightening the abdominal wall pulls in the abdomen and corrects any bulge or diastasis that resulted from having children. If you’re tall you likely have a significant distance between your lower ribs and your pelvis, and the mid-line tightening till also cause notable bowing of the muscles along your flank region, which will result in a more hourglass-like figure.

For most patients between 30%-50% of the abdominal skin can be removed, which eliminates any stretch marks which may have previously been present. The remaining skin becomes thinner because it is stretched out to cover the whole abdomen. A new belly button is also created.

With “standard” scar length tummy tucks, aligning the scars helps pull in the waist line and also improves the hourglass shape. With longer scar lengths, or extended abdominoplasties, patients experience the benefit of an anterior thigh lift.

In many cases a surgeon will also perform liposuction with a timmy tuck.
